The Umbrella Academy brings 'Dallas' to L.A.
08:33 AM PT, Nov 21 2008 Put your monocle on: The singular weird brilliance of the "Umbrella Academy" is coming to Secret Headquarters tonight.
if you live in Southern California, then you have pretty much no choice but to make your way to the great L.A. comics shop and gallery tonight in Los Angeles, where "Academy" author and My Chemical Romance lead singer Gerard Way will be hosting a party to celebrate the Nov. 26 release next week of "The Umbrella Academy: Dallas," the follow-up to the six-issue "Apocalypse Suite" series that introduced the critically acclaimed series.
The Dark Horse Comics event, aptly named “Blueprints of The Umbrella Academy,” will kick off around 8 p.m. and run “pretty much until everybody leaves. So until 10, 11, 12ish,” said Dave Pifer, owner of Secret Headquarters. On display will be concept art by Way, as well as original artwork from the series by Gabriel Bá, who handles the pencils and inks on the book. Beer and cocktails will be served for the 21 and up crowd, but the event is open to all ages, Pifer said. If you can't make it, there's a still a silver lining: The art will be on display at Secret Headquarters through Dec. 11.
Since "Apocalypse Suite" hit stores,a little over a year ago, Way and Bá picked up an Eisner Award for Best Limited Series and the comic was optioned by Universal to be turned into a movie with an expected release of either 2010 or 2011.
Also, check out Dark Horse’s website for a flash-animation trailer for "Dallas" and a neat "making-of-the-comic" feature which shows how the book goes from Way’s concept and script to Bá’s penciled and inked pages, on through the coloring by Dave Stewart and lettering by Nate Piekos.
The first issue of "Dallas," by the way, features both a regular cover by Bá as well as a variant cover by the esteemed Jim Lee. As the series title hints, Way takes his insolent brats and their surreal life of adventures into a particularly dark chapter of American political history in the 1960s.
